Tips to keep your home safe when you travel

Now that vaccines are in full force, many people are planning to travel more in 2021. Here are a few short tips you can follow to keep your home safe and avoid an insurance claim while you’re away whenever you’re leaving the Overland Park or Kansas City area.

  1. Hold your mail. You can create an account with the USPS and schedule a mail hold. A bonus to this service is that once you have a USPS account, you can receive emails daily showing what mail is arriving at your house that day.

  2. Pause newspaper delivery. You can request your paper be held while you’re away. You can either have them delivered after you return or have them donated to schools!

  3. Contact your local police department. Many local municipalities, such as Prairie Village, offer programs to check on your home while you’re gone

  4. Unplug any unnecessary appliances. Even appliances that are turned off are still drawing power while plugged in. Avoid electrical issues by unplugging anything that doesn’t need to be connected to power while you’re away

  5. Keep your heat or AC on, but lower/raise the thermostat. Especially in the winter, you don’t want to turn off your heat and cause a frozen pipe, but you can certainly lower the thermostat to conserve energy

  6. Designate a nearby friend or relative to help you with anything while you’re gone. It’s good to have someone on call in case the worst happens

These are just a few tips, but they can help you prevent thefts or other claims!
